Assignments

All assignments must be completed in order to receive a “Pass” for the class. Exceptions are made only in the most extreme of circumstances.

Bootcamp Day 1 HW, due Wednesday, Aug 28th:

  1. Draft your section syllabus. Bring a hard copy with you to class.
  2. Draft your first day lesson plan. Write out your specific learning objectives.
  3. Prepare some board work responses to the list of questions we gave out. Aim to be able to answer the questions in 2-3 minutes.

Bootcamp Day 2 HW, due Wednesday, Sept 4th:

  1. Have great first sections!
  2. Watch the two videos of professors lecturing. Answer the questions found on the “Instructor Lecture Videos” worksheet, found on the main Wiki page.

Class 3 HW, due Wednesday, Sept 11th:

  1. Glance over everyone's teaching times on the main page of the Wiki and see who you might want to pair up with for section visits. Those not teaching or GSIing lab, you will join another duo and visit one of their sections.
  2. Start keeping your weekly teaching logs.
  3. Start thinking about your extended teaching logs.
  4. If you have not taught yet, have great first sections!

Class 4 HW, due Wednesday, Sept 18th:

  1. Read “Six Ways to Discourage Learning” by Duncan (can be found under Suggested Readings - Active Learning)
  2. Next week, your first extended logs are due. 10 GSIs and GSIs not teaching can have an extra week.
  3. Visit your partner's sections and have your offline meeting.

Class 5 HW, due Wednesday, Sept 25th:

  1. Visit your partner's sections and have your offline meeting.
  2. Bring with you the completed worksheet from your peer visitations. These will be collected.
  3. Write one multiple choice question (5 choices, no throw-aways) and one free response question. Bring a copy of them to class next week.

Class 6 HW, due Wednesday, Oct 2nd:

  1. Draft a paragraph (no more than one page) of your teaching philosophy. Use the prompts on Day 6 to help you out.
  2. We will be visiting the sections that have not yet been visited next week.
  3. For those who received their videos today, watch them and then e-mail us to find a time to meet.
  4. The second extended teaching log is due next week. Ay10 GSIs and those not teaching have an additional week. Anyone else who turned in their first log late DOES NOT have an additional week.

Class 7 HW, due Wednesday, Oct 9th:

  1. If you have not scheduled your chat with the instructors, set that up soon!
  2. Bring your completed video worksheet to class next week. We will collect them.

Class 8 HW, due Wednesday, Oct 16th:

  1. This is the last day to turn in your video worksheets.
  2. Your third extended log is due this week. Please bring us a hard copy or email one to us before class.
  3. Start drafting your mid-semester evaluation form. Plan to give it in the next two weeks of section.
  4. We will be checking your smaller logs next week. Bring some of your lesson plans into class.

Class 9 HW, due Wednesday, Oct 22nd:

  1. Give your mid-semester evaluations by the end of the week.

Class 10 HW, due Wednesday Oct 30th:

  1. Analyze your evaluations and compile a one page sheet of the results. Bring the sheet with you to class next week for discussion.

Class 11 HW, due Wednesday Nov 6th:

  1. Read the article by Hammer: hammerresources.pdf
  2. Start brainstorming about what your Design-A-Section topic will be.

Class 12 HW, due Wednesday Nov 13th:

  1. Read the article by Redish: RedishPDF
  2. Complete Milestone 1 for Design-A-Section.

Class 13 HW, due Wednesday Nov 20th:

  1. Watch the TED talk by Stuart Firestein on ignorance in science: LINK.
  2. Complete Milestone 2 for Design-A-Section.
